NPF meeting 18th -20 July 2014.

The final National Policy Forum ( NPF ) gathering of the current cycle took place in Milton Keynes over a long weekend starting on 18th July 2014. This was the first of these meetings to take place with Labour in opposition. It was a relief to find a less Orwellian atmosphere here than had prevailed at the Warwick meetings. However, as one literary ambiance declines so another rises and there was definitely something of the Lewis Carroll about the weekend’s proceedings.

Milton Keynes, 18/20 July 2014

Like the last pre-election Forum in 2008 this was held on the hottest weekend of the year, but there the similarities ceased, and not just with the move from Warwick University to Milton Keynes.  For the most part constructive dialogue and willingness to compromise outweighed arm- twisting, and all sections of the movement could co-operate instead of being played off against each other.

Ed Balls addressing Labour NPF 2014

The climax of Labour’s formal policy process this weekend which had involved 1,300 amendments from local parties to eight policy documents, filtered down and composited by 77 regional representatives, was a debate on austerity. That’s fitting given that it is the foundation of the Coalition’s disastrous economic policy and, unfortunately, in a lighter version, of Ed Balls’s approach too.

National Executive Committee, 3 June 2014 Ann Black Print E-mail
Wednesday, 02 July 2014

The NEC congratulated newly-elected councillors and MEPs and thanked members, trade unions and party staff for their hard work. In July David Sparks will become Chair of the Local Government Association, as Labour is now the largest group, and he hoped to welcome Ed Miliband to their annual conference.
